RAFT Writing

RAFT writing is really very simple. R - A - F - T stands for Role, Audience, Format, and Topic. The Role is the person (or animal or object) you are pretending to be as you write. The Audience is the person or people you are writing to. The Format is what you are actuallyy writing - like a letter, a diary entry, a poster, or maybe an advertisement. The Topic is the subject you are writing about.

For more information about how to complete a RAFT writing assignment, you can view the RAFT Writing Power Point or see an example of a completed Raft Writing Assignment.

For this assignment, you will be writing about the economic and political relationship between the colonies and England.

Assignment

At first, the colonies accepted support from England, but after a while, England tried to increase its control over the colonies. You are a member of Parliament (Parliament is the legislative branch of the British government - like Congress is here in the United States) and you want to help the King with some ideas about how to increase England's control over the colonies:

Role: Member of Parliament

Audience - King George III

Format - a letter of suggestion or a proposal

Topic - How we can impose greater economic and political control over the colonies

You may use your notebook, textbook, or the internet to help you. Here are some links that may give you some ideas about what to include in your letter:
